If we have a democratic structure today and a Constitution, Parliamentary system, elections from time to time, changes of government according to wishes of the people, with Fundamental Rights for everybody, an independent Judiciary, with all the abuses that may have come from time to time after his departure, we are still a living democracy. We owe it to Jawaharlal Nehru.

I called him the gentle Colossus because he was in some way the Colossus, a giant figure. Many people, even in government, who were well intentioned would say Jawaharlal has so much power, why doesnt he exercise it. Who would also say that he has a giant strength, why doesnt he exercise it like a giant? He didnt. He failed the sterner tests of history, because he was not cut out to be a revolutionary. In his autobiography he refers to an incident, Shikar. He had gone on Shikar and he writes, you will find it in the autobiography, that a little antilope hurt, came to him, dropped down at his feet, his big eyes full of fear, looking dumbly at him. And Jawaharlal said, "The little ardor I had for Shikar vanished on that day." A man who could write that, a man who could feel like that is not cut out to be a revolutionary who has to be ruthless, who has to conduct things in a manner which requires at least a temporary demobilisation of many human instincts.D. B. Karnik
He was human, essentially human and his reactions were human to every incident of his life he has reacted in a most cultured human way, whether it is secularism whether it was socialism, or any other philosophy. He really was a great man but he was also a good man.

And therefore, it’s a good thing, that after all, in the Centenary of his birth we are making some effort to recollect him. And when we recollect a man who has given his life a life of service to the country, then we should recollect him not only in his defects and deficiencies but in his virtues, his qualifications. Let us remember him as best we can and follow atleast to the better traditions in our National Movement which need to be objectified in our political, social, economic, cultural and other kinds of work today.
